In-so-far as the local ambiance is concerned, the resemblance to California is undeniably striking, though the waves themselves take their character from Australia and New Zealand. Add a bit of ‘Aloha'  and the masterpiece is complete.

The Basque Surf is born

In 1957 the first surfboard arrived in France with a Californian scriptwriter making a film in Biarritz. Immediately fascinated with the virgin waves and the overwhelming magic of the coast, Peter Viertel sent home for his board.

In a blink of an eye, the Basque surf culture emerged. Local shapers, riders and competitions formed, creating the foundations of what would become one of the hottest spots in the world of surf.
