Gourmet delights

Gastronomy is of prime importance here, with famous products and typical local dishes.

On the Basque side you will find some emblematic specialities such as Espelette chilli peppers, Bayonne ham, Pyrenees lamb, St Jean de Luz tuna, Itxassou cherries, and the wines of Irouléguy.

On the Béarn side, you will love the mountain cheeses, garbure, Béarn Andouille, foie gras, the wines of Jurançon or Madiran…

In such a gourmet area there are a whole host of good restaurants: something for everyone and every budget, from the simple Assiette de Pays to starred establishments (two stars for Hotel des Pyrénées in Saint Jean Pied de Port) via village inns, ventas, tapas bars and cider houses… Certain restaurateurs offer half-day cookery lessons.
