The Rocher de la Vierge
Since 1864, the statue of the Virgin protects the safe return of local fishermen so that do not get lost in one of the thundering storms.
Originally set on a large rock off the coast, the Vierge would became accessible to the public under the order of Napoleon III. In 1887 the original wooden bridge was replaced by the bridge now used the crossing between the mainland and the coastal rock.
The Musee de la Mer
Now that the magnificent grace of the Vierge has been uncovered, turn around and discover the Musee de la Mer (museum of the sea).
Facing the ocean front, a true display of style and art… the imposing museum is noted foremost for its striking architecture and the quality of its collection within. Built in 1935, the museum contains all the secrets of Gascon, the region and its people.
In 2011, the area has doubled. Now, through 25 aquariums, come and see the famous octopus, lobsters, whale skeletons, rays, turtles, seals as well as tropical fish or hammerhead sharks.
The Cité de l’Océan et du surf
The museum of the ocean and surfing, intends to raise awareness of oceanic issues and explore educational and scientific aspects of the surf and sea and their role upon our leisure, science, and ecology. Opened in 2011, its wave-shaped architecture, consists of a museum building, exhibition spaces, and an esplanade.
